Strongholds gives players an near-unlimited amount of resources so they can just focus on building troops and waging war. The Normal 2v2 works for those who like to deal with resource management as well as battles. It seems as though the focus of the game has been on creating fun game types that cater to different styles. The single-player campaign was decent, but the more notable features was the multiplayer modes. The one interesting change is that named Spartans are now hero units, and they have abilities such as an attack that lets they jump to enemies above them and a hijack move for vehicles. Other than that, the game mostly feels the same. Meanwhile the right bumper is now dedicated to select local units and all units. The left bumper is used for fast camera movements. The D-pad is still used to jump to different bases and armies on the map, but “Halo Wars 2” now uses the left trigger to access the Leader Powers. The new teams handling the series slightly tweaked the controls. At a preview event, I had a chance to play the second mission of single-player campaign and three multiplayer modes: Normal 2 versus 2, Strongholds and Blitz. If the gameplay isn’t broken, don’t try to fix. With “ Halo Wars 2,” 343 Industries and Creative Assembly, makers of the “ Total War” franchise, stick to a winning formula. Bringing an RTS to the consoles had always proved difficult, but “Halo Wars” on the Xbox 360 managed to do a good job recreating the feel of the genre. Focusing on quick-twitch movements and a plethora of hot keys, it’s a genre that’s tailored to the PC with its mouse and keyboard. For a long time, the real-time strategy game had trouble translating to consoles.
